They’re not songwriters. They’re poets.

There’s a guy called Alex. I’ve never met him but I know of him.
But the thing is, I don’t need to have met Mr Turner to know that he isn’t just a songwriter,
he’s a poet.

I’m going to share my top 5 ultimate songs that have so much meaning and truly are worthy.

If you’ve read my blog before, you’ve probably gathered that I have some… well, some would say strong.. but I’d probably argue that they were… determined opinions. Yep that sound less closed minded.

But for me, personally, music is a biggie. Today a lot of music feels like it revolves around profit. It seems today’s society is completely engrossed by consumerism and it’s time to change that and right now we’re the fresh faced, bright eyed, suited up new generation that can finally beat the system.

It depresses me to think that all our lives are based around profit. I mean think about it. We get an education, to get a job, to earn the highest possible income. Isn’t there more to life than that?

Have you ever seen one of those 1950s adverts with families that sit down and actually talk to eachother. I don’t know about you but I spend most of my time trying to avoid my siblings. Every single year kids are showered with gifts. But we still have that hunger inside us for more and its never enough to fill our stomachs because there are always new things to add to that never-ending wish list. So you better start thinking bout what you want next year.

But you know what, what am I saying? Money is great. Yesterday, someone gave me a pound and I felt like I’d been sent to the moon and back. Money is a thick blanket of comfort and security.

But be careful it doesn’t suffocate you, because at the moment we’re all stuck in this narcissistic corporal system. We’re like rats chasing the exact same piece of cheese and all because we’ve been programmed to do so and we have been all our lives.

So come on. Let’s beat the system.

Music isn’t just an industry. Its an escape route. It gives hope. It tells the loneliest person in the world that someone else understands. This is in a nutshell why it so important to me.

Anyway here we go…

5. PULP –Common People

Whether you consider yourself part of the, quote, “common people” or not this is a song about identity and everyone can relate to that. The famous lyrics not only express deep emotion but also give hope…

But still you’ll never get it right
‘cos when you’re laid in bed at night watching roaches climb the wall
If you call your Dad he could stop it all.
You’ll never live like common people
You’ll never do what common people do
You’ll never fail like common people
You’ll never watch your life slide out of view, and dance and drink and screw
Because there’s nothing else to do.

4. NIRVANA –smells like teen spirit

This song needs no introduction. Possibly one of the greatest grunge songs of all time. No one really knows what was going through Kurt Cobain’s mind when he wrote this. Does this song have any hidden meaning at all? I think like all great songs, the meanings aren’t given to us like a plate of food, no, we’re meant to draw our own personal conclusions. Because maybe everyone goes through different experiences and if we all met there’s no guarantee that we’d even like each other but all of us can listen to this song and have it mean something to them.

Hello, hello, hello, how low (x3)
Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us

A mulatto, an albino
A mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey, yay

3. THE SMITHS –Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want

This song is beautiful in a word. It’s so understated yet extremely powerful.
Next time you get tired of it all just tune into a bit of Morrissey and you’ll be ok.

Good times for a change
see, the luck I’ve had
can make a good man
turn bad

So please please please
let me, let me, let me
let me get what I want
this time

Haven’t had a dream in a long time
see, the life I’ve had
can make a good man bad

So for once in my life
let me get what I want
Lord knows it would be the first time
Lord knows it would be the first time

2. ARCTIC MONKEYS –a certain romance

This may surprise you that this is the first song that was made in the last decade. Well. I’m sorry but they’re better than some rapper singing out some girl who had one fine butt. I don’t care about this and frankly why would I want to be singing along to lyrics that objectify women.
Anyway this song explains everything I feel about society today, its incredibly poignant and even if you don’t get a chance to listen to this masterpiece please at least read the lyrics. Because they deserve to be appreciated.

Well oh they might wear classic Reeboks
Or knackered Converse
Or tracky bottoms stucked in socks
But all of that’s what the point is not
The point’s that there is no romance around there

And there’s the truth that they can’t see
They’d probably like to throw a punch at me
And if you could only see them, then you would agree
Agree that there ain’t no romance around there

You know, oh, it’s a funny thing, you know?
We’ll tell them if you like
We’ll tell them all tonight
They’ll never listen
Because their minds are made up
And course it’s all OK to carry on that way

Cause over there there’s broken bones
There’s only music, so that there’s new ringtones
And it doesn’t take no Sherlock Holmes
To see it’s a little different around here

Don’t get me wrong though there’s boys in bands
And kids who like to scrap with pool cues in their hands
And just cause he’s had a couple of cans
He thinks it’s alright to act like a dickhead

Don’t you know, oh it’s a funny thing you know
We’ll tell them if you like
We’ll tell them all tonight
They’ll never listen
Because their minds are made up
And of course it’s all OK to carry on that way
But I said no, oh no!
Well oh, you won’t get me to go
Not anywhere, not anywhere
No, I won’t go, oh no, no?

But over there there’s friends of mine
What can I say, I’ve known them for a long long time
And they might overstep the line
But you just cannot get angry in the same way
No, not in the same way
So not in the same way
Oh no, oh no, no!

1. STONE ROSES –I am the Resurrection

This song is so important and so personal to me. Now, I’m not the sort of person who cries at Marley and Me, but every time I hear this music, those lyrics I find myself overwhelmed with emotion.
This song is a journey.
The beginning is angry full of hate and pain. Full of hurt.
If you’ve ever had someone make you feel like nothing. Like you’re worthless. You will be able to relate to these words. Their sung in low murmurs but really they’re screaming. They’re saying,
look at me -look at what you’ve done to me. Every thing I’ve done and felt is because of YOU.
But these words aren’t said out of anger
They’re said out of pain.
And then just as it all comes flooding back,
Ian Brown says,
but you know what -I’m different
“I am the resurrection and I am a life
and I couldn’t ever bring myself to hate you as I’d like”
Now this is where I need to clarify that there are no tears of pain instead, there are tears of joy.

Down, down, you bring me down
I hear you knocking down my door
And I can’t sleep at night.
Your face it has no place
No room for you inside my house
I need to be alone.

Don’t waste your words I don’t need anything from you,
I don’t care where you’ve been or what you plan to do.

Turn, turn, I wish you’d learn
There’s a time and place for everything
I’ve got to get it through.
Cut loose ’cause you’re no use
I couldn’t stand another
Second in your company.

Don’t waste your words I don’t need anything from you,
I don’t care where you’ve been or what you plan to do.

Stone me why can’t you see
You’re a no one nowhere washed up baby
Who’d look better dead.
Your tongue is far too long
I don’t like the way it sucks and
Slurs upon my every word.

Don’t waste your words I don’t need anything from you,
I don’t care where you’ve been or what you plan to do.

I am the resurrection and I am the life,
I couldn’t ever bring myself to hate you as I’d like.

I am the resurrection and I am the life,
I couldn’t ever bring myself to hate you as I’d like.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Now maybe I’ve thought way to much into these songs but who cares. I wanted to share them not so I could force my (let’s face it) strong opinions on you but simply because if they can give me even an ounce of hope they might be able to do the same for someone else too.

So, I’ll leave you now in the hands of a poet.

And over there,

there’s broken bones.

There’s only music,

so that there’s new ringtones,

And it don’t take no Sherlock Holmes,

To see it’s a little different around here.
